Geothermal Energy Advantages and Disadvantages

Geothermal Energy Advantages and Disadvantages- What You Should Know
Geothermal Energy is energy that is harvest from the earth’s crust. The energy source is renewable and widely available providing the proper tools. The energy source is used by both homeowners and industrial companies to provide energy needs. Thus, utilizing the energy source comes with both advantages and disadvantages of geothermal energy.
Advantages of Geothermal Energy
- The Energy source can be utilized and maintained by homeowners- Servicing of geothermal systems are minimal which translate to lower operational cost. The operational life of the internal components of the system is around 25 years and 40 years for the ground loop
- Geothermal Energy is a Renewable source- The energy source will always be
available and disposable because of just like the earth continually replenishes our water supply through rain similarly the earth’s crust constantly produces heat.
- Homeowners that utilize the source can receive tax rebate and credits- Many states have introduced incentives for homeowners to benefit from the energy. The tax rebate tries to reduce the upfront cost of the system; as well Energy providers are known to issue subsidies of over $3000.00 to homeowners.
- Geothermal Energy produces little to no environmental impact- One of the biggest issues with fossil fuels were harmful emissions that created acid rain which geothermal energy reduces by 97%
- Proven energy source- the source has been used for hundreds of years heating baths, preparing meals and heating homes and buildings
- Cools and Heats home

Disadvantages of Geothermal Energy
- Installation can be difficult- Long pipes are used in the installation process; therefore some densely populated areas will prove difficult for the task.
- Cost of geothermal energy to install- The installation and operating equipment can be rather costly upfront. If your region does not have many geothermal energy supported homes it can be difficult locating qualified personnel to do the job.
- Not completely environmentally friendly- Geothermal system operates using refrigerants to power the pump for its cooling process. Many homeowners also draw energy from the national grid to power the pump (alternative are solar panels).
